In a laboratory, immediately activate the emergency eyewash or safety shower upon exposure to hazardous materials. Flush affected eyes or skin with water for at least 15 minutes, removing contaminated clothing or contact lenses during the rinse. Seek medical attention promptly after decontamination, regardless of injury severity.
Emergency Eyewash Station Procedures:
- Activate: Push the lever, pull the handle, or step on the pedal to start the flow.
- Flush: Hold eyelids open with thumbs and forefingers to ensure water reaches all surfaces; roll eyeballs back and forth.
- Duration: Flush for a min. of 15 minutes.
- Contacts: If wearing contacts, flush for 15 minutes, removing them during the process.
Emergency Safety Shower Procedures:
- Activate: Pull the handle, chain, or lever to start the flow.
- Drench: Stand directly under the showerhead for a min. of 15 minutes.
- Clothing: Remove all contaminated clothing, including shoes and jewelry, while under the water.
- Position: Rotate under the water to ensure all affected skin is thoroughly rinsed.
General Safety Guidelines:
- Location: Know the location of the nearest station (within a 10-second walk).
- Assistance: Have a colleague call for medical help (e.g., 911).
- Safety Data Sheet (SDS): Bring the SDS of the chemical to medical personnel.
- Post-Incident: Report the accident to your supervisor and file an incident report.
